Teaching Academic Vocabulary Through a Science of Reading Lens
Need a new look at teaching academic vocabulary? The Science of Reading refers to the growing body of research that studies how students learn to read and the instructional practices that are the most effective to help them develop reading skills. This 2-part Institute will introduce the Science of Reading and its recommendations for academic vocabulary development.
Participants will use a Science of Reading lens to try strategies for building academic vocabulary for ABE/ASE and advanced ESL students. Techniques for online and in-person instruction will be included along with current resources for lesson planning and student practice.
Between the two webinars, participants will complete an assignment using strategies learned with their class. During the second webinar, the “Virtual Learning Community,” participants will share their experiences and learn about additional Science of Reading techniques.
