Illinois adult education programs are experiencing an increase in English learners, many with little or no prior English language instruction. In addition, some recent arrivals have very limited prior education, while others have a first language that doesn’t use the Roman alphabet. Teachers of beginning ESL students are often challenged to know where to begin, what materials to use, and how to teach these students effectively. 

This two-part webinar series is designed to support instructors of Beginning ESL Literacy (NRS ESL Level 1) students. The presenters will facilitate a sample lesson and multiple video demonstrations enabling participants to:

• Recognize factors affecting language learning for Beginning ESL Literacy students
• Asses Beginning ESL Literacy students
• Sequence language skills instruction and identify appropriate vocabulary sets for students who are starting at zero level
• Use visuals and shared experiences as the basis for oral and print-based language instruction
• Develop and implement level-appropriate instructional routines
• Identify suitable instructional resources for in-person and remote learning

A total of 3.5 hours of professional development will be provided to those who attend both parts of the training.

Participation is open to instructors employed by Illinois Community College Board-funded adult education programs and the New Americans Initiative (NAI) only.
